At least 11 of the meteorological balloons, carrying 18,000 packs of illegal cigarettes, have since been recovered

Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.

Flight Disruptions

The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.

International Illegal Trade

Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."

To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.

Cross-Border Effects

At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.

Smuggling Techniques

Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."

Regional Security Context

The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.

Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
