The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
