Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a military coup in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the capital, the capital city, is located around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, prompting him to impose a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will have a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that he be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. The current president was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were detained.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 presidential election.
