Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system caused widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
